CancúnforTourists.com for Cancún's Top Tourist Tips Activities within Cancún Within Cancun itself, there are some activities that most would enjoy, beyond the activities related to typical resort vacations e.g. "active" tours. Shopping and exploring If you are staying in the hotel zone, then do take the bus into downtown, and wander into the markets (e.g. Mercado 28), where you will see a distinctly unglitzy side. There are restaurants downtown too. More importantly, there is a reality and grittiness to the downtown area that cannot be found in the hotel zone. Cancún is quite a shopping haven. For an air-conditioned mall, try the Plaza Kukulcán, with a dense concentration of all sorts of stores. A charming shopping center is the La Isla Shopping Village, with its waterways and palm trees, and outdoor cafes. There is also another craft market in the hotel zone called Coral Negro. By and large, you can bargain at markets, but not in the malls. The craft markets do tend to sell the same sorts of things, but once in a while, you will find a souvenir that you will treasure, not least because of your association with talking to the vendor. Other items that are unique would be silver and leather. You can explore at the Maya Fair Plaza or any other major shopping centers like the Flamingo. Once again, some may be horrified at how Americanized some of the malls are. Some find the predictability comforting. BUT there is something for everyone. Entertainment/culture Well, the majority of visitors have to take the day trips out of Cancún for their cultural edification. However, there is a small archaelogical museum near to the Convention Center, and also a folkloric dance company that performs at the Convention Center. Cancún also has a bullring, although that could hardly be considered high culture! There is a restaurant outfit called Mango Tango (check at your hotel) that does very nice dinner/show packages, with both high-quality shows and food, in a lovely ambience. The show is a mixture of dance, tricks etc., but is entertaining and polished. Clubbing is a major activity in Cancún. Major. These range from more wild to the more dignified at the Ritz-Carlton. La Boom, Señor Frog's, Coco Bongo, plus American Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock, are just a few. Many of these have cover charges, provide entertainment, sometimes have ladies' nights etc. etc. And of course, at spring break, some of these places are absolutely wild! Outdoor activities There are ample opportunities for snorkeling, boat trips, scuba diving, as well as eco adventure tours. (See link on previous page.) Some include lunch and an open bar, some are more roughshod and austere. Isla Mujeres (featured on Day Trips page) is a popular destination for the boat excursions combined with snorkeling etc. Or you could purchase a tour that would include a Dolphin Swim. Any number of companies will vie for your business! A word about tours: While many of these are convenient, you can end up spending quite a bit of time doing the hotel pick-up and drop-off. Some may not have much tolerance for being herded around either. For certain day trips, and if you know where you want to go, it is worth renting a car for the day, and having the independence of your own schedule. However, activities like scuba diving and those eco tours are best supervised.
